Despite diamonds being one of the hardest natural substances on earth, the oil from your skin and dirt and dust in the air can have a dramatic effect on its brilliance and sparkle.
While you can stop in to Miner’s North Jewelers anytime and we’ll clean your jewelry for free, we know it’s not always possible to have a professional cleaning and inspection. You can take steps to keep your diamond looking great in between professional cleanings:
Avoid wearing diamonds when handling cleaning products. Use protective gloves to ensure harsh chemicals don’t come in contact with your diamond or any other fine jewelry.
Don’t wear diamonds while in hot tubs or swimming pools as chlorine can dull the diamond.
Don’t wear your diamond when doing rough work. If hit at the perfect angle with enough force, it can chip or crack.
In between professional cleanings, diamond jewelry can be cleaned at home using a two part (one part each) solution of cold water and household ammonia. Soak the piece for 30 minutes and use a soft bristle toothbrush or eyebrow brush to carefully clean around the front and back of the mounting. Place the piece back in the ammonia solution to rinse, and then dry on a lint free cloth. Remember: Never clean diamond and pearl jewelry in cleaning solution.
Store your diamond jewelry in a fabric-lined jewel case or box separated from other pieces of jewelry. Diamonds have the ability to scratch one another, so do not jumble pieces together in a drawer or jewelry box.
Visit Miner’s North Jewelers at least once a year (we recommend every 6 months) and have your jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected to ensure all gems, prongs, clasps, and settings are tight and secure.
